The CW‘s ‘Arrowverse‘ has enjoyed a lengthy existence through various shows that made up its collective universe of stories. There were crossovers between shows and, technically, even other networks as shows like Supergirl changed their platforms. But now one of the few remaining early players will be speeding out. The CW has announced that the upcoming ninth season of The Flash will be its last and running to only thirteen episodes.
There had been speculation that the most recent season would be its last, but a deal was reached with the main cast (including title player Grant Gustin) and the ending was tweaked from a series-ender to a season-ender to allow it to continue. It will be broadcast in a mid-season spot in 2023.
“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world,” executive producer/showrunner Eric Wallace said in a statement released early Monday.
Superman & Lois (entering its third season) and newcomer Gotham Knights will be the other two DC/Warner properties on the CW schedule.
