Yes, it’s that time of the year when we’re in the midst of nominations and awards – with the ‘daddy’ of them all – the Academy Awards, aka the ‘Oscars’ being handed out on 12th March. The nominations were announced Tuesday and you can see the full list below.
Some of the noms were predictable, but still interesting. Everything, Everywhere All at Once might have been seen as an expensive arthouse film in previous years but it’s good reviews, unique blend of the silly and the bizarre certainly captured the imagination and has propelled it to the top of the nomination list. Notably, the great Michelle Yeoh becomes the first Asian actor ever nominated in the Best Actress category and Ke Huy Quan continues his ‘comeback’.
Elsewhere, in an era where some question the importance of the Oscars and their nominees, seeing them as films that may be well reviewed but not always popular with the masses, it’s noteworthy that tent-pole studio movies such as Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water and Wakanda Forever have got some love… perhaps on purpose to generate a wider audience on the awards night…
