Oscars: Everything, Everywhere, Every Award, All at Once…

There's a universe where 'Everything, Everywhere...' *didn't* clean up at the Oscars. This isn't that universe...

There were a few surprises at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, but very few genuine shocks. A year ago and the biggest surprise would have been Everything, Everywhere, All at Once – a wacky tale about Michelle yeo’s character being pinballed through the multiverse – being in the mix… but there’s been a buzz about that film ever since nomination season and it didn’t disappoint. At the award ceremony it did better than just being in the mix, it cleared up on almost all the awards for which it could be nominated. As well as the Best Picture and Director statuettes, the film landed Michelle Yeoh the Best Actress making her the first eastern actress to receive the award. Ke Huy Quan got the biggest of all comebacks as the former Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom sidekick and Goonies got the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.  Jamie Lee Curtis, won for Actress in a Supporting Role in the film.

Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser for his performance as an obese man in The Whale and Guillermo del Toro won in the Best Animated Film category with Pinocchio.

Elsewhere, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water both got the expected technical nods (perhaps suspecting as much, Tom Cruise and James Cameron were no-shows). Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won for Costume Design but couldn’t emulate the original’s all-around success. Angela Bassett, who had been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and who had won several key awards this past year making her a favourite, lost out to Jamie Lee Curtis. Bassett apparently didn’t join the latter’s standing ovation.
