As COVID shows no sign of loosening its hold – with over 400,000 related deaths in the US to date and with indications it could reach half-a-million before the end of the month – the entertainment industry is presuming its delays will extend well into the summer and the films that moved from 2020 in 2021 continue to have the length of their delay extended. Somewhat as expected the next James Bond movie, aptly entitled No Time to Die has now been confirmed to be moving from 2nd April to 8th October. The film, the 25th official Bond movie, was one of the first major titles to shift its original date from March 2020.
This week also brought news that other titles would be shifting.
Marvel movie Morbius– which we reported was moving from 11th March to 8th October – will now avoid a direct clash with 007 by moving even further and landing on 21st January 2022.to Jan. 21, 2022.
The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark will move from 12th March to 24th September. The much-anticipated Ghostbusters: Afterlife , directed by Jason Reitman, had shifted its date to 11th June and will now materialise on 11th November. The adaptation of hit PS4 game series Unchartered (featuring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg) has moved from 16th July all the way to 11th February 2022. There will also be a shift in some other movies (such as Cinderella and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) as films move to both avoid the pandemic and keep their distance from the tentpoles’ new dates.
Twentieth Century‘s The King’s Man was still on for 12th March but as of Friday morning, the release date had shifted to 20th August. Paramount‘s A Quiet Place: Part Two was set for 23rd April but is now arriving 17th September.
They aren’t likely to to be the last changes… There is still some speculation that F9 (the latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise) will not stay on its current 28th May release, even after its year-long delay and all eyes will be on whether Black Widow maintains its May date or transfers to Disney+.
