The current run of Star Trek: Picard may only have reached the halfway mark, but news arrives of some of the familiar faces we can expect to appear in the series third and final season. Perhaps earlier than you might have thought we’d get the news, but not unexpected over-all, some of those faces will include more of Sir Patrick’s previous co-stars on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Levar Burton, Gates McFadden and Michael Dorn return to the Trek television screen collectively for the first time since the TNG finale episode All Good Things. Actor/Director Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis (who previously reprised their roles as the happily-married Riker and Troi in last season’s Nepenthe) will be back and in some way, shape or form, we’ll have Brent Spiner (though whether that means Data or not, only time will tell). Either way it’s definitely a TNG reunion of rather epic proportions.
“I remember watching the premiere of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science fiction. So, it’s most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire [Picard] team and I can’t wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!” Terry Matalas, Season 3’s showrunner, said in a statement.
There’s little doubt that the current run and the final season (which has now completed filming) are acting as a kind of book-ending to Picard’s decades-long space-faring saga, though Sir Patrick has indicated that it might still not be a final, definitive end for the character.
