Though rumoured for a while, it’s now been officially confirmed by New Line that they are working on a sequel to classic horror The Evil Dead and is currently intending it to be shown exclusively on HBO Max. Entitled Evil Dead Rise, the film will be directed by Lee Cronin (2019’s The Hole in the Groundwith Sam Raimi , Robert Tapert and original star Bruce Campbell all on board in producing capacities.  However, Campbell is not currently going to star in the project.

The film will be shot on location in New Zealand (with post-production work  in Ireland) and will have a more urban environment and focus on two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Jungle) who meet up again but have the  reunion gate-crashed by the demons of the title.

“I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film,” said Raimi in a statement. “The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”

“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations. I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition,” Campbell added.
