You might have been forgiven for not knowing that there was yet another Charlie’s Angels reboot on the horizon. The marketing surrounding the upcoming film hasn’t exactly been kicking into gear until now and other attempts to reinvent the classic 70s show have had decidedly mixed fortunes. the original show ran from 1976 to 1981. ‘McG’ brought it to the big screen in 2000 with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore in the main roles. A new tv series was attemptd in 2011, but lasted barely eight episodes before being cancelled.
The latest film – from Sony Pictures and due in cinemas in November – is the passion-project of Elizabeth Banks who has moved behind the camera and is gaining a lot of respect as a director. Here she writes, directs and stars as Bosley (alongside Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou in the same named ‘role’ apparently). The film’s main stars are Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Personal Shopper) as Sabina, Naomi Scott (Aladdin) as Elena, Ella Balinska (The Athena) as Jane and Luis Gerardo Mendez as ‘The Saint’ all shooting, kicking, dancing and partying through a mission to retrieve cutting-edge technology that appears to have fallen into the wrong hands. Every self-respecting female-empowerment movie needs an suitable soundtrack and it’s supplied here by a team-up of Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Ray.
The trailer suggests an upgrade to the Charles Townsend business, but with a similar sense of tone as the McG versions: globe-trotting fun, stylish designs and a suspension of disbelief…
