Ghostbusters has been a generationally successful franchise – the first movie (released waaaaaay back in 1984) being a landmark movie that still works today. Its 1989 sequel was not quite as popular but was still a relative hit.
The female Ghostbusters reboot of 2016 was perfectly decent in and of itself but suffered from appallingly mixed marketing that couldn’t decide whether it was a reinvention or sequel and ended up as neither.
2022’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife somewhat defied expectations, managing to blend the original continuity with a ‘next generation’ of kids caught up with a spooky dilemma linked to the original trio. Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson all returned in what amounted to deus ex machina cameos at the film’s climax and even the late Harold Ramis was in the mix courtesy of CGI.
The success of Afterlife ignited the idea there might be further Ghostbusters films and, lo and behold, here comes the trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – with the metropolis once again facing supernatural shenanigans. In the new film the Spengler family we met in Afterlife returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse that housed the original Ghostbusters HQ and ready to team up with them and learn the technical advancements in busting ghosts. But they discovery an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil and very cold force.
As well as the OG team of Murray, Ackroyd and Hudson, (and Annie Potts) we’ll also see more of Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim.
The ghosts are back in the machine from 29th March, 2024.
