We were promised that the expanding Walking Dead universe was ultimately heaing towards a series of movies based around Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln). The first annoucements in that regard came back as 2018, when Lincoln’s character was written out of the main show… not killed but whisked away on a helicopter to parts unknown. But there’s been little information since – partly due to other projects seemingly taking priority and then the COVID pandemic.
Now we know those movies aren’t happening anymore. The good news is that the show’s SDCC panel brought out Lincoln and his on-screen partner, Danai Gurira (aka the katana-weilding Michonne) for a surprise announcements that the two will be a headlining a new SERIES that reunites Michonne and Rick and starts the next chapter of their post-apocalyptic journey. A six-episode series – as yet untitled – will be broadcast in 2023 and is planned as an ongoing hereafter rather than a standalone mini-series.
The duo made the announcement in front of a packed hall…
“This is kind of overwhelming, because you are the hardest of the hardcore fans, we have something we want to tell you first…” Lincoln started with Guirira adding: “We have been cooking something up for you all because we missed you and we owe you the conclusion of this story of Rick and Michonne.”
“So next year, there’s going to be six episodes on AMC+ airing in 2023, so next year there’s going to be a lot more to talk about. I personally can’t wait to get my cowboys boots back on and get the band back together,” Lincoln laughed.
The news comes in the wake of recent updates that confirmed a Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Negan and Lauren Cohan/Maggie series called Isle of the Dead (set in Manhattan) which should also appear some time in 2023 and the less happy news that the Daryl/Carol spin-off would be going forward but without the Melissa McBride half of that equation as she didn’t want to be
Next month sees a Tales of the Walking Dead anthology and the third and final part of the main Walking Dead‘s farewell season arrives in October…
