SDCC-22: Groot Expectations and Reanimated Animations…

There was a lot of animation news, especially from Marvel, on the first day of this year's SDCC...

There were details about a raft of animated Marvel/Disney+ projects including a revival of the 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series called X-Men ’97, a confirmation of What If…? Season 3 and new entry Spider-man: Freshman (first announced as part of the Disney+ Day last year)…

As we already know, Marvel‘s Super-sapling Groot gets his own series of animated shorts debuting in August. The official trailer for the much-touted series, perhaps predictably entitled I am Groot after its talkative titular twig was launched at SDCC and gave audiences an idea of what to expect…

Spider-man: Freshman is set within the MCU but details Peter Parker’s earliest days as a would-be superhero (an era the movie introduction completely skipped over).  Concept art was shown at Marvel‘s panel, showing Peter’s first homemade suit. Interestingly, it seems Tom Holland will not be reprising the voice (a similar situation to Parker’s presence in What if..?) but expect Daredevil to be part of the story with Charlie Cox back as Matt Murdock. It is currently due to debut in 2024. In addition to this there’s also a Spider-man: Sophmore Year in the works as well.

X-Men ’97 is the animated series picking up from the popular classic X-Men: The Animated Series of the 90s and will arrive late in 2023. (For the sake of full-disclosure, I wrote the official guide to that series). The classic team of Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Beast, Professor X and Rogue ill be the core of the show and a second season of X-Men ’97 has already got the greenlight. (The original series, which will also be running on Disney+ has had its schedule corrected to the originally intended running order).

Marvel Zombies takes its premise from the Marvel Comics print series and the recent episode of What If..? that depicted a scenario where a virus killed and reanimated the corpses of many Marvel mainstays.  The series will depict a group of heroes who find themselves fighting not just for their own survival but against characters that were once their allies. Indications are that it will be aimed at mature audiences.
