The new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, released just ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, is the kind of teaser that’s going to be played over and over again and freeze-framed as many times in search of clues (both visual and audio) into what the sequel may offer when it debuts in May.
Having recently undergone reshoots to accommodate that it was being released after Spider-man: No Way Home and not before (as originally planned before COVID), there appears to be a lot that the film is keeping secret – which may include a multiverse of guest-stars and surprise appearances. There’s a lot front and centre in the trailer (the return of Benedict Wong as Wong, Chewitel Ejiofor as Mordo, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and the introduction of Xochitl Gomex as America Chavez and serious suggestions this could tie-in to Marvel‘s animated What if..? series on Disney+) to excite but it’s an ‘Illuminati’ sequence around the 1:17 mark that is getting the interwebs chattering in the minutes since the trailer debuted. A voice coming from off-screen sounds A LOT like Sir Patrick Stewart which would seem to give credence to one of the wilder rumours that the ‘multiverse’ aspect of the story would be a way to bring in some of the X-Men from the FOX franchise.
And – if that voice is Stewart, regardless of the X-Men implications – it would also suggest that Marvel is keeping even bigger surprises well away from prying eyes and ears.
Whatever the truth, we’ll find out when the film debuts in cinemas on 6th May.
