Gods, Kings, Fire & Blood: HBO’s European Launch teases ‘Thrones’ prequel…

The 'Game of Thrones' prequel is set to launch in 2022...

It’s generally accepted that HBO‘s adaptation of Game of Thrones is one of the finest, epic tales of the last decade… and equally true that many felt its final season – which pulled it far ahead of George R R Martin’s original tomes to date and therefore had to decide the characters’ fates for themselves  – was a let-down with a finale that didn’t deliver on its promise.

Given that interest is still high in all things GOT, spin-offs were always considered as a practical and financial certainty… and though some of the projects have stalled, the main effort, a prequel set two-to-three hundred years before the original series’ events, is edging closer to the screen. It tells the tale of the start of the House Targaryen and the events that ultimately lead up to the Targaryen civil war (known as the Dance of the Dragons).

With HBO Max now launching in European territories, the launch event showed a teaser to give an idea of style and tone.

Matt Smith, he of Doctor Who fame, narrates the teaser and appears on screen as Prince Daemon Targaryen – with ominous words and pictures suggesting that the conflict will be just as intense as we’ve seen before. Other members of the cast include Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, and Paddy Considine.

There’s no specific date for broadcast, but the ten episode series is set to launch sometime in 2022.
