Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden plays David Budd, a war veteran now employed as a top-level officer for the ‘Royalty and Specialist Protection’ part of the Metropolitan Police Service. Essentially that means he is assigned to prominent subjects who may be under genuine threat of harm. His latest assignment is to protect Home Secretary, Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), an ambitious politician with her eyes on becoming even more powerful. Her political stance and values are everything that Budd hates, but Montague doesn’t really care for his opinions – he’s there to do one job: keep her safe. But as it becomes clear just how far Monatgue will go with her personal and professional aims and ho far others might go to thwart them, Budd begins to wonder how much his job is worth…
Madden’s role in Game of Thrones has made him a prominent UK actor and Hawes is no stranger to action and drama with key roles in Spooks/MI-5 and Line of Duty. The supporting cast includes Gina McKee, Sophie Rundell, Vincent Franklin and Nina Toussaint-White.
Bodyguard looks to combine elements of those shows with a distinct House of Cards vibe added into the mix. Jed Mecurio, who worked with Hawes on Line of Duty has also penned this six-part drama.
