There’s no shortage of archive material to mine for future features and this coming March, seminal ’80s action series The Fall Guy sees an adaptation, or sorts. Ryan Gosling most recently appeared in Barbie and Emily Blunt was in Oppenheimer (the weirdest double-date of the year) and here they’re together in the same film.
Gosling will be playing the eponymous stuntman Colt Seavers, though the set-up is somewhat different from the series of old. More of a star-crossed buddy pic, the film – directed by David Leitch ( an ex-stuntman himself and already known for Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and as the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night) – sees Colt/Gosling having left the stunt world and being drafted back in by his ex, Jody Moren (Blunt) when the star of her film mysteriously goes missing and she needs Colt to double for him until he turns up. Colt agrees, thinking he might be able to get back into Molly’s good graces, but it turns out there’s more to disappearance than meets the eye and now Colt and Jody may not have a safety-net to rely on. Also onboard are Winston Duke (Black Panther) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
Whether this will largely be The Fall Guy in name and easter-egg references only (and more of a formula wacky action piece), remains to be seen, but it could also be Leitch’s welcome nod to how under-appreciated the stunt-community really is…
