In an era where franchise and connective universes (even multiverses) seem to be the rule of the day, it perhaps shouldn’t come as anything other than a welcome surprise that Michael Connelly’s on-screen empire is growing. Bosch – featuring Titus Welliver as the veteran police detective Harry Bosch – has emerged from an acclaimed six year run as a series on Amazon to continue with Bosch: Legacy on the platform’s freevee service. Over on Netflix, Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer (featuring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as freewheeling attorney Mickey Haller) is also gearing up for a second season later this year.
But now there will be other strings to the bow. Renée Ballard, frequently teamed with Harry Bosch in the novels and who has emerged as a central character in her own right is set to get her own series. The set-up looks to emulate elements from the most recent title, Desert Star, in which Ballard is chosen to head up a Cold Case squad. So far no actor has been announced for the role. The second show will feature Bosch’s previous partner J. Edgar. According to the news, the character is ‘tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami. In this glamorous city, he is forced to balance his new life with the gritty underbelly of the city, while being chased by his mysterious past…‘ At this point, Jamie Hector who played the character in Bosch is apparently in talks to reprise the role.
It’s not entirely clear if there will be specific overlaps between the characters and shows. The separate platforms that feature Mickey Haller (Netflix) and Harry Bosch (freevee) means no official overlap was possible (though there’s been some nice easter-eggs in there) but the plan is for both new shows join Bosch on freevee, so it seems far more likely for those.
Connelly’s next novel – featuring Mickey Haller – is called Resurrection Walk and will be released in print, eBook, and audiobook on November 7, 2023, in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
