The African country of Wakanda may have been hidden from prying eyes for centuries, but its emergence into the outside world in the Marvel movies has been one of the MCU‘s greatest success-stories and an integral part of the cinematic landscape created joining everything together.
Even with the loss of Chadwick Boseman who played Kig T’Challa aka Black Panther – and whose passing has had a fundamental impact on where the Black Panther sequel and the greater MCU heads next – it seems there’s a rich vein of both vibranium and creativity to be mined from Wakanda and so Disney and Marvel have announced that there are plans to make a Disney+ series based around the country and its culture. It is part of a major five-year deal that The Walt Disney Company has made with Ryan Coogler (who helmed the first Black Panther movie) and his company Proximity Media and which includes him heling the sequel and the series.

As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share

An exact timeline for when to expect the Wakanda series is not known. As of now, the Black Panther sequel is still in pre-production for a 2022 release and Coogler has stated that the role of T’Challa will not be recast – which means it looks as if someone else will be picking up the Black Panther mantle… how that will be shown is still a closely guarded secret.
