Red Notice is one of those films that is purpose-built with a very specific template – combining top self-deprecating actors at the height of their fame and a fun, caper plot and scene-filled banter designed to keep the action moving. It’s the sort of film that would have to misfire spectacularly NOT to be an enticing fun romp and a success.
Red Notice (not to be confused with the messy and disappointing SAS: Red Notice released earlier this year which was wisely rebranded as SAS: Rise of the Black Swan in the US) sees FBI profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) strong-arming top-notch second-best-art-thief-in-the-world Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) into helping him track and bring down notorious ‘The Bishop’ (Gal Gadot), who’s currently number one). But there’s betrayals, agendas and counter-agendas at work as they all seek to retrieve and keep a priceless set of artefacts. The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also plays the ‘ Exhausted Film Director In Bar’ during one scene.
While it might have been denied a massive cinema-opening because of the fallout of COVID, the newly trailer promises all the relevant ingredients, ahead of the launch of the film on 5th November in select cinemas and a week later streaming on Netflix.
It looks promising and, at worst, like a highly-fun guilty pleasure…
