Big Emmy Nods for ‘Watchmen’, ‘Ozark’ and ‘The Mandalorian’…

HBO‘s Watchmen mini-series has received a lot of attention in a year when some of its central themes have resonated more than ever. Now it’s received 26 nominations as part of this year’s Emmy Awards.

Of the plentiful nominations the production received, categories included: Outstanding Limited Series,  Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special and three Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special. Regina King for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, Jeremy Irons for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie,  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jovan Adepo and Louis Gossett Jr. for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, Jean Smart for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Jean Smart. Technical / behind the scenes nominations included Outstanding Casting For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special, Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

Regina King tweeted: “Every single writer, director, cast, and crew member dug deep and gave everything because we believed in Dave Gibbons & Alan Moore’s story that was reimagined by Damon Lindelof. Thank you Television Academy for recognizing one of the most timely & important projects of our careers“.

Netflix‘s highly-acclaimed drama Ozark (which will return next year for an expanded fourteen-episode final season) received eighteen nominations. These included… Best Drama Series, Jason Bateman for Lead Actor in a Dram Series,  Laura Linney for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Julia Garner for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Bateman also nabbed a Guest Actor In a Drama Series for his recurring role as Terry Maitland on HBO’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider).  Disney +‘s Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian received fifteen, mainly technical nominations including:  Outstanding Drama Series,  Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, Production Design for Narrative Program (half-hour), Cinematography for Single Camera (half-hour), Fantasy/sci-fi costumes, single-camera Picture Editing for a Drama series (three nominations), Prosthetic make-up, music composition, Guest Actor in a Drama series (Giancarlo Esposito), Sound-editing in a comedy/drama half-hour series (two nominations), Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series or Movie and director/actor Taikia Waititi received a nod for voicing the IG-11 character.

Though COVID may impact ‘physical’ proceedings, The 72nd Emmy Awards are set to be ‘hosted’ by Jimmy Kimmel and will be broadcast live in the US on Sunday, 20th September, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
